A classic icon with roots in diving

The Rolex Submariner 114060 definitely follows the tradition of its predecessors. However, its recognition value is just one of the reasons why it is so popular. The original with the Ref. 6204, introduced in 1953, was specially developed for diving. It had a corrosion-resistant stainless-steel bracelet and with the Oyster case, which was waterproof at a diving depth of up to 100 m, it broke all the records that time.

Even today, the Oyster case is still one of the recognition features of modern Rolex watches. Inspired by the oyster shell, it withstands even high pressure underwater and provides the movement with protection against penetrating water and external influences such as dust and shocks. Rolex constantly tested the Oyster case to the limit: in 1923 the top sportswoman Mercedes Gleitze swam across the English Channel with a Rolex watch on her wrist. It took 10 hours to cross the channel; the watch survived this extreme stress completely unharmed. It didn't take long for further pioneering work in water sports to follow. Upcoming models of the Submariner were soon water-resistant at diving depths of up to 200 m, most recent watches even up to 300 m. Thanks to luminescent hands and indices, the Rolex Submariner 114060 is always easy to read, even in poor lighting conditions. Since the introduction of the new Submariner series in 2008, all models have also been equipped with a scratch-resistant Cerachrom bezel with platinum graduation. The reference 114060 is a sports model without a date display, a so-called Submariner "No Date", and was presented for the first time in 2012.

Characteristics of the Rolex Submariner 114060

Even though it was developed for diving, the Submariner 114060 cuts an equally good figure under the jacket. The Glidelock buckle also allows a quick adjustment of the size: no problem to go directly from the meeting to your next dive. With a case diameter of 40 mm, it is conspicuous enough to make a statement and still doesn't look swanky.

Visually, it is a classic variation of the Submariner: as the "No Date" it dispenses with the date display, while the bezel and the dial are kept in elegant black. The Cerachrom bezel can be turned in one direction and is easy to handle even with diving gloves, thanks to the typical Rolex prongs. It allows the diver to keep an eye on his diving time while reading his decompression time. At 12 o'clock find a dot filled with an illuminant, which guarantees optimal readability even in poor lighting conditions.

The movement is a calibre 3130 with a fully automatic self-winding mechanism and a 48-hour power reserve. Scratch-resistant sapphire crystal is used as the watch crystal, while the case and bracelet are made of robust 904 L stainless steel. It is mainly used in chemical and industrial technology, as well as in aviation and is corrosion-resistant and additionally easy to maintain.

The Submariner 114060 compared to other Rolex series

Rolex Deepsea 116660

The Deepsea 116660 is equipped with calibre 3135, the Submariner 114060 with a calibre 3130. The Deepsea is also equipped with a helium valve that automatically compensates pressure differences of 3 to 5 bar.

Both look optically similar. The bezel and dial are both kept in classic black with luminescent hour-markers and hands for good legibility in low light conditions. The Cerachrom bezel has a 60-minute graduation giving the diver an optimal indication of diving and decompression time. One difference is the date display without magnifying glass on the Deepsea 116660, which the Submariner 114060 doesn't have. Glass and bezel, however, are more prominent on the Deepsea to make it suitable for extreme conditions underwater. At Baselworld 2018, Rolex presented the new Deepsea 126660, which differs from its predecessor primarily with a wider strap and a new calibre 3235 movement.

Rolex GMT-Master II 116710LN

Unlike the Submariner, which was designed as a diving watch underwater, the GMT-Master II 116710LN is designed for use in the air. It was developed for Pan Am pilots in 1951 and is still closely associated with the airline today.

First distinctions can be made quickly at first glance: The GMT-Master II 116710LN has an additional pointer. This indicates the 24-hour graduation of the bezel and can thus indicate a second time zone, which is equally helpful for pilots and frequent travellers. On the Submariner 114060 bezel, divers can therefore read dive and decompression time. It also features only the classic three clock hands for seconds, minutes and hours. The Submariner is waterproof at a depth of 300m, while the 116710LN is only waterproof at up to 100m. In contrast to the Submariner 114060, the latter also features a date display with classic Rolex magnifying glass. Furthermore, both are equipped with different movements. The Submariner 114060 has a calibre 3130, the GMT-Master II 116710LN a calibre 3168.

The Oyster bracelet of both watches is classic three-part. The middle part of the GMT-Master II is polished and gives it a more elegant look. The Submariner underlines its sportiness by a middle link in all-brushed optics. Its buckle is a visibly longer Glidelock buckle, which is easy to adjust and allows the watch to be worn either over the diver's suit or on the wrist.

Both watches do not lag behind each other in any way. They offer optimum comfort and elegant design. The graduations on the bezel of the GMT-Master II are slightly wider and therefore appear more prominent. It is the ideal companion when you travel a lot or work in several time zones. The Submariner is not only suitable for diving enthusiasts and convinces with its classic look and excellent quality.
