The Rolex Submariner 116610LN is a sports model with date display. Originally developed as a robust diver's watch, it is now a classic icon of style. The 116610LN is a modern advancement of the original model introduced in 1953. The first variant of the Rolex Submariner had a corrosion-resistant stainless steel bracelet and was already equipped with the waterproof Oyster case. With a diving depth of up to 100 metres, it was waterproof and a sensation at the time.

The Oyster case is a key element of modern Rolex watches. Like an oyster shell, it reliably protects the movement from external influences. The Oyster case passed its first endurance test in 1927, when the sportswoman Mercedes Gleitze swam through the English Channel with it. For ten hours, the Rolex Oyster case withstood extreme weather conditions and survived this sporting achievement in full working order. This laid the foundation for further pioneering work in water sports.

The new Oyster model's waterproof housing withstands depths of up to 300 metres and looks good even in extreme situations while meeting the new demands of diving. The luminescent hands and indices guarantee optimum visibility for up to eight hours, even in poor lighting conditions. The Submariner models have been equipped with a scratch-resistant cerachrome bezel with platinum graduations since 2008.

The 116610LN compared to the Sea-Dweller and GMT-Master II

These Rolex models are made of robust 904 L stainless steel, which is mainly used in aviation and industrial technology. It is particularly resistant to extreme conditions and easy to service. The 116610LN and 116600 were both originally designed for diving and are similar in functionality. The 116710LN is visually similar to both, but the original was developed for aviation applications. All three models have the characteristic date magnifier mentioned above.

Rolex 116610LN vs. Sea-Dweller 116600

The Sea-Dweller 116600 is much more massive than the Submariner 116610LN with its 43 mm case. It is also equipped with the reliable Oyster case and is waterproof up to a diving depth of 1120 metres. This makes it suitable for extreme conditions, but it is also more substantial and eye-catching on the wrist. With the Glidelock clasp, both models offer the option of easily enlarging the wristband so that the watch can also be worn over the diver's suit. Like the 116610LN, the 116600 is equipped with the caliber 3135 movement.

Rolex 116610LN vs. GMT-Master II 116710LN

While the 116610LN was developed for aquatic use, the GMT-Master II 116710LN was developed for pilots. At first glance, the two visually differ in the bezel: the 116710LN changes easily between two time zones thanks to its quick adjustment and automatic timing. In addition to the hour, minute and second hands, an extra hand indicates the 24-hour bezel, which can be set to the local time zone.

The 116610LN allows you to read dive and decompression time. It is also waterproof at depths of up to 300 metres, while its counterpart is only waterproof at depths of up to 100 metres.

The inner workings of both watches vary only with regard to the movement: in order to be able to display the time zone, the calibre 3186 of the 116710LN was slightly increased compared to the calibre 3135 of the 116610LN. Otherwise, the two calibers are similar in terms of power reserve (48 hours) and robustness against shocks and temperature fluctuations.
